  4. Country Description:  Austria is a highly developed stable democracy with a
  5. modern economy.  Tourist facilities are widely available.
  6.  
  7. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  A visa is not required for
  8. business or tourist stays up to three months.  For information concerning
  9. longer stays or other entry regulations, travelers can contact the Embassy
  10. of Austria at 3524 International Court, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, tel.
  11. (202) 895-6750, or the nearest Austrian Consulate General in Chicago, Los
  12. Angeles, or New York.

  14. Medical Facilities:  Good medical care is widely available.  U.S. medical
  15. insurance is not always valid outside the United States.  Travelers have
  16. found that in some cases, supplemental medical insurance with specific
  17. overseas coverage has proved to be useful.  Information on specific health
  18. matters is available through the Centers for Disease Control's international
  19. travelers hotline at (404) 332-4559.

  21. Crime Information:  Austria has a low crime rate, and violent crime is rare.
  22.  However, crimes involving theft of personal property have increased in
  23. recent years.  Travelers can become targets of pickpockets and purse
  24. snatchers who operate where tourists tend to gather, favorite spots being
  25. Vienna's two largest train stations.  The loss or theft of a U.S. passport
  26. overseas should be reported immediately to the local police and the nearest
  27. U.S. embassy or consulate.  U.S. citizens can refer to the Department of
  28. State's pamphlet "A Safe Trip Abroad" for ways to promote a more trouble-
  29. free trip.  The pamphlet is available from the Superintendent of Documents,
  30. U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

  32. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  33. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in
  34. illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences
  35. and fines.

  37. Other Information:  Certain Austrian Airways flights between Austria and
  38. various Middle Eastern points (usually Damascus or Amman) make en route
  39. stops in Beirut.  (The State Department warns U.S. citizens to avoid all
  40. travel to or through Lebanon and that U.S. passports are not valid for such
  41. travel without special validation.)

  43. Registration:  U.S. citizens who register in the Consular Section of the
  44. U.S. Embassy or Consular Agency can obtain updated information on travel and
  45. security in Austria.

  47. Embassy and Consulate Locations: The U.S. Embassy in Vienna is located at
  48. Boltzmanngasse 16 in the 9th District.  The Consular Section of the U.S.
  49. Embassy is located on the 4th floor of Gartenbaupromenade 2 in the 1st
  50. District.  The telephone number for both the Embassy and the Consular
  51. Section is (43-1) 31-339, and the fax number is (43-1) 513-4351.  There is
  52. also a Consular Agency in Salzburg at Herbert Von Karajan Platz 1, telephone
  53. (43-662) 84-87-76.  Office hours for the Consular Agency are Monday,
  54. Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.  U.S. citizens in Salzburg
  55. who require emergency assistance after hours should contact the U.S. Embassy
  56. in Vienna.
